Get your yoga on!
We are excited to introduce a new activity at the club – Kundalini Yoga! We are offering a 6-week introductory course for beginners. Classes will be led by a certified Kundalini Yoga instructor. These classes are appropriate for all shapes, sizes, ages, levels of fitness, gender, and previous Yoga experience. Depending upon the popularity of the classes, we may expand beyond the initial 6 classes offered.
When are the classes?
6/30 – 4:30pm – 6pm
7/14 – 4:30pm – 6pm
7/28 – 4:30pm – 6pm
8/11 – 4:30pm – 6pm
8/18 – 4:30pm – 6pm
9/8 – 4:30pm – 6pm
Do I have to attend every one of the 6 classes?
Absolutely not! If you can only make one or two classes, that’s totally fine. And if you miss the first class, don’t worry about it. Each class will be an entirely individual experience, and while we will build upon some of the themes over the series, you will receive specific guidance during each class to have a great experience.
What does it cost to attend?
$10 for the yoga class. (Members and non-members.)
If you’re a member and there’s a play event after, only $15 for both events. If you’re a non-member and want to stay for a play event after, it’s an additional $25 to join.
What is Kundalini Yoga?
Kundalini Yoga is known as the yoga of awareness or consciousness. It uses breath (Pranayam), postures (Asanas) and meditation (mantra) to cleanse the chakras and awaken your Kundalini energy. If you’ve done any yoga before, you will be familiar with much of the practice. The main difference with Kundalini vs. other forms of yoga is the focus on breath work and on meditation. The practice of Kundalini Yoga enables us to harness the energy of the mind and emotions, so we can be in control of ourselves, rather than being controlled by our thoughts and feelings.
What’s a typical class like?
Kundalini Yoga classes follow a standard flow. We start by tuning in with a quick chant. There may be a few warm up exercises or Pranayam. Each class will include a kriya (set of postures). Next there will be deep relaxation and meditation. Finally, we close with a short song and a prayer.
How long are the classes?
Classes can range from an hour to 90 minutes. For this beginners series we are targeting an hour and 15 minutes of active class time, plus 15 minutes for chat and Q&A.
What do I need to wear?
Anything, everything, or nothing at all. It’s your yoga experience, so the choice is yours. The Kundalini guidelines recommend white clothing (to increase your radiance) and a white headcover or scarf, and the teacher will be wearing some version of this. The main thing is to dress in a way that’s comfortable for you.
What do I need to bring?
Water or something to drink and a yoga mat are essential. A small pillow or large towel can be helpful to sit on during meditation. The main thing to bring is an open heart and mind, and a willingness to experience the practice.
